Dirty Bomb launched in Open Beta on June 2, 2015 and officially reached its 1.0 release on August 28, 2018, when Splash Damage pushed a major update that removed "BETA BUILD" tags, refreshed the Steam store text, and transitioned the game to its full release state. That August 28, 2018 update was the last major content drop on record — and also the last substantive developer communication until a server hosting announcement on April 15, 2026. That April 2026 post announced a partnership with xREALM for community server rentals, a purely infrastructure/maintenance update with no mention of new content, features, or future development plans. The game has received no new mercenaries, maps, modes, or gameplay content since August 2018 — nearly eight years. The 1.0 launch was clearly the end of the active content development cycle. While Splash Damage continues to keep the servers operational (as shown by the April 2026 xREALM post), this constitutes maintenance rather than active development. The game is a free-to-play competitive shooter that can still be played, but its content development concluded with the 1.0 release in August 2018.

A string of 'dirty bomb' attacks cripple London, leaving the Central Disaster Authority to restore it. When criminal syndicate Jackal begin disrupting and stealing their technology, the capital is thrown into chaos as mercenaries from across the globe are hired by both sides.
