Evaluation

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees launched on May 18, 2022 and has received a consistent stream of post-launch updates from Broken Rules. Three major content updates have shipped: Daily Runs competitive mode (September 28, 2022), the in-game Encyclopedia with unlockable entries (December 9, 2022), and the Challenge Modes update introducing Sprints and Endurance Runs (February 28, 2026). In addition, a significant feature patch landed on February 28, 2024, adding a hawk-eagle predator to Liberation mode along with visual and gameplay polish. The three major updates establish a release pattern, though with irregular spacing: roughly three months between the first two, then a gap of over three years before the third. That third major update — Challenge Modes — arrived on February 28, 2026, making it the most recent official communication from the developer. As of today (October 1, 2026), that is approximately seven months since the last major update. Given the irregular cadence between major releases (spanning from a few months to several years), silence of seven months does not clearly signal that development has ended. No developer statement has announced the conclusion of development or indicated that no further content is planned. The game remains available for purchase and Broken Rules has not communicated any winding down of support.

Master the gibbon’s art of brachiation (swinging from branch to branch) at high speed, building momentum, pulling off spectacular somersaults, and launching yourself higher and further into the air with the help of your fellow Gibbons, feeling the thrill and exhilaration of life in an untamed jungle.

Features:

  • Experience free-flowing dynamic movement based on brachiation, the way real gibbons swing through the trees.
  • Master acrobatic moves, including launching from another gibbon’s hands in mid air
  • A touching adventure of a family of gibbons trying to survive amid an encroaching human threat.
  • Play through an hourlong adventure in story mode, or race to freedom through a procedurally generated jungle in liberation mode.
  • Compete in the leaderboards and see how far you can swing, backflip and slide in Daily Run mode.
  • Stunning 2D hand painted visuals that breathe life into a rapidly vanishing world.
  • Explore varied environments, from the wild jungles of Southeast Asia to the hectic human world beyond.
  • Collect all encyclopedia entries and find out more about gibbons and their habitat.
