GunsBox VR has been in Early Access since February 1, 2022 and remains so as of today. Despite a major July 22, 2025 update (NEWS-6) in which the developer announced a transition to free-to-play and described entering a "pre-release phase" with an official launch "planned next week," the Steam Early Access flag remains active — meaning the game has not formally graduated to a full 1.0 release on the platform. The Steam Early Access flag is the sole authority for this status.
Throughout its Early Access period, the game has maintained a consistent and active development cadence. Major updates shipped on September 5, 2022 (v1.5.0), August 8, 2023 (v1.7.2), January 15, 2024 (v1.9.0), and July 22, 2025 (the landmark free-to-play overhaul). Feature patches have followed at a steady pace in 2026: January 21 (v2.0.2), February 6 (v2.0.3), April 2 (v2.0.4), April 28 (v2.0.5), and most recently August 9, 2026 (v2.1.0). Each update has brought new weapons, system refinements, UI improvements, engine upgrades, and performance work — far beyond simple maintenance.
The August 9, 2026 update is the most recent developer communication, and it is notably forward-looking. The developer migrated the game to a newer version of Unity, explicitly framing it as "an important step forward" and "a more solid foundation for future updates." They also began implementing a new VR weapon training system and stated plainly: "This is only the beginning" and "More weapons, more features, more improvements, and more new things are coming in future updates. Stay with us — there's much more to come!" There is no indication whatsoever that development is winding down.
Evidence
Update v2.1.0 migrated the game to a newer Unity engine version, reworked the grabbing and snapping systems, added 9 new weapons and skins, and began implementing a new VR weapon training system. The developer stated this is 'only the beginning' of the training system and that 'more weapons, more features, more improvements, and more new things are coming in future updates.'
Landmark update announcing the game going free-to-play, a complete UI overhaul, a new Armory system, and a transition to a 'pre-release phase' ahead of an official 1.0 launch. Developer committed to continued post-launch content including free updates.
