Evaluation
Half-Life originally launched on November 19, 1998 and has been a complete, finished game for decades. Over the years Valve has issued occasional maintenance and compatibility patches — notably a 2013 update adding Mac/Linux support and SteamPipe delivery, a 2019 bug-fix patch, and a series of security and compatibility fixes.
The most significant recent work was the 25th Anniversary Update released on November 19, 2023, which added a meaningful package of new and restored content: the Half-Life: Uplink demo chapter, seven multiplayer maps (four brand new, three restored from old media), new and restored player models, controller support, Steam Deck verification, and extensive modernization of the engine, UI, and rendering. A follow-up series of bug-fix patches in November–December 2023 addressed issues introduced by that update, with the last of those shipping on October 2, 2024.
Valve framed the 25th Anniversary Update explicitly as a milestone celebration — "we thought this milestone was a great opportunity to spruce up the player experience" — and the post closes with "Thank you, everyone, truly, for 25 years of Half-Life." There is no roadmap, no announced future DLC, no season pass, and no stated intent to continue adding content beyond this anniversary package. The single DLC listed on the store (the Half-Life Soundtrack) is already released. Post-anniversary patches have been purely maintenance in nature. The game is complete as a content package, with the 25th Anniversary Update representing its final content addition.
