Evaluation

Have a Nice Death launched into full 1.0 release on March 22, 2023, after a successful Early Access period. The 1.0 launch introduced the eighth and final department — the Inevitable Time Department — along with the conclusion of the game's main storyline, marking the completion of the content arc the developers had planned throughout Early Access. Following launch, the developer (Magic Design Studios, under publisher Gearbox Publishing at the time) issued a post-launch patch on April 13, 2023 with balancing and bug fixes, and a developer letter on April 11, 2023 describing planned quality-of-life improvements and balance changes. Importantly, that letter described only refinements and fixes — no new worlds, story content, or major expansions were announced or promised. The only DLC available are a soundtrack (released March 30, 2023) and a digital artbook (released March 24, 2023) — neither represents gameplay content, and both are fully released. On April 8, 2024, the publisher rebranded from Gearbox Publishing to Arc Games, but this was an organizational announcement and contained no new content commitments for Have a Nice Death specifically. The news scan covering 47 posts shows 6 major content drops — all of which occurred either during Early Access or at the 1.0 launch. There have been no major content releases after March 2023, and no announcements of future expansions, DLC, or updates of any kind. The last developer communication of substance was the April 2023 post-launch patch. With no outstanding content commitments, no unreleased DLC, no announced future updates, and a storyline that the developer explicitly concluded at 1.0 launch, the game is complete as shipped.

About this game

Welcome to Have a Nice Death 1.0!
Huge thank you to our community during our Early Access journey! You can now experience the eighth department - the Inevitable Time Department - with a new boss, mini-boss, enemies, the end of the storyline, "quality of death" improvements and much more.

Discover and explore the darkly-charming, procedurally-generated departments of Death Inc., where you’ll meet a diverse cast of memorable characters—like your affable pumpkin-headed assistant, Pump Quinn—who are always willing to share the latest office gossip

Sharpen your skills (and scythe) through fast-paced hack n’ slash combat, utilizing over 70 unique weapons and spells you can find and upgrade to create devastating combinations

Since Death can’t die, use what you’ve learned and earned to overcome the numerous minions and bosses in each department of Death Incorporated... over and over. A performance review after every run guarantees that you’ll unlock interesting items and upgrades that will help you progress on your journey

Taking more power for yourself is a controversial move in Death Incorporated’s company culture. For instance, adopting a Curse upgrade for yourself might result in the Labor Inspector granting your subordinates enhanced powers, or worse, raising the cost of koffee and other items that are vital to your work output
