Evaluation

Katanaut launched on September 10, 2025 and has been receiving a sustained flow of content from its solo developer, Eugene (Voidmaw), ever since. The game has shipped two major content updates post-launch: v1.1 on January 5, 2026 (new areas, enemies, weapons, and global leaderboards) and the "Into the Void" update (v1.2) on August 7, 2026 (a new difficulty mode called Warp 4, a new level called The Warp, a new final boss named Samaelix, five new elite enemies, a full katana skill tree with over 270 nodes, and more). This establishes a major content cadence of roughly every 6–7 months, and as of today (September 24, 2026) we are only about 7 weeks past the most recent major release — well within that window. Beyond major updates, the developer ships feature patches and balance updates on a near-weekly basis. The most recent post on record is Patch 1.212 from August 29, 2026, which launched a new leaderboard season (Season 6), added four new leaderboard categories, and included sweeping balance changes. The game also runs monthly competitive leaderboard seasons with custom in-game rewards, which by their nature commit the developer to ongoing engagement each month. Console ports for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch are in active development. Xbox and PlayStation store pages were linked in a June 27, 2026 post, with Switch also described as on the way. Porting work has also produced performance improvements for PC players. The developer has not made any statement suggesting development is winding down. The evidence points clearly to a game in the middle of a sustained, active post-launch content cycle with no announced endpoint.

About this game

Katanaut is a fast-paced, Metroidvania-inspired action roguelite set aboard a massive space station falling into cosmic chaos. With the station slowly spiraling out of control, and its once-human inhabitants twisted into terrors, you’re the unlucky one tasked with uncovering what is going on... assuming you’re able to survive the station's violent halls with souls-like combat.

As Naut, you explore the corridors of this once vibrant station... or what's left of it. The deeper you descend into the station, the environments become more haunting, and the enemies less human.

Through advanced time-manipulation, you’re brought back to life whenever your bio-metrics are no longer detected. In the future where humans are able to download new abilities on demand, the station is now scattered with memory fragments from the fallen. Each one having the potential of being a lost skill or talent waiting to be unlocked.

Every run offers a new pivoted challenge with ever-changing pathways to explore, and pits you against hordes of enemies. Each ride down the station's elevators carries forward progress from the memory fragments you scavenge along your exploration.

In Katanaut, each clash of your blade echoes through the station's empty and flickering corridors, where every corner feels like is a surprise watching you... Whether you thrive in precision combat or prefer dealing with enemies from a safe distance, this is one cleanup job you won't forget.
