Evaluation

Kholat launched on June 9, 2015 as a complete, self-contained exploration horror game based on the Dyatlov Pass incident, narrated by Sean Bean. The developer released early post-launch patches (July 2015) and added localization support over time (Turkish/Italian in July 2015, Chinese in January 2019). The studio subsequently ported the game to Xbox One (June 9, 2017) and Nintendo Switch (May 14, 2020), but these are platform expansions, not new content. The only meaningful content addition beyond the base game was the "Kholat: Aftermath Part 1" comic book DLC, released on December 15, 2017 — a digital comic serving as a story sequel. Both DLC items (the soundtrack and the comic book) are fully released, and no unreleased DLC is listed on the store. The title "Part 1" in the comic book implies a Part 2 was at least considered, and the announcement post from June 2017 used language hinting at a story continuation. However, no Part 2 was ever announced, listed, or shipped in the roughly nine years since. The last developer communication of any kind was the Nintendo Switch launch post on May 14, 2020 — now more than six years ago. There is no roadmap, no unshipped DLC, and no developer statement indicating ongoing or planned content. The game launched as a finished single-player experience, and all post-launch additions have long since shipped. The content is complete.

About this game

Narrated by one of the most popular British actors, Sean Bean, Kholat is an exploration adventure game with elements of horror, inspired by a true event known as the Dyatlov Pass incident – a mysterious death of nine Russian hikers, which led to countless, unconfirmed hypotheses. The player will plunge directly into the boundless scenery of the inhospitable Ural Mountains with the task to find out what really happened. In the course of events, you may come across more speculations than expected...

Will you find the answer?
Will you get any closer to the truth?
Will you survive?

Dyatlov Pass incident was a real story that happened in winter of 1959. Nine skilled alpinists went for a trip to the northern part of Ural Mountains, which ended fatally. Bodies of expedition's crew were found scattered on slope of Kholat Syakhl.

Russian investigators closed the case stating that "a compelling unknown force" had caused the deaths.
