Evaluation

Lost Lives is a solo-developed 2D multiplayer shooter currently in Early Access, launched on August 29, 2025. At launch, the developer explicitly described it as "not the complete experience" and committed to adding new content, balancing, and polish throughout Early Access. The Early Access goals listed by the developer include adding maps, modes, equipment, factions, and quests — all areas the developer has continued to deliver on. Since the previous evaluation in June 2026, development has remained highly active. Update 0.8.2 shipped on July 31, 2026 — a major content release adding two new game modes (Team Battle and Gun Game), a co-op subtask system, monthly leaderboards with seasons, a new weapon (FAMAS), seven new consumable items, and the Supporter Pack DLC. This was followed quickly by feature patch 0.8.2.2 on August 7, 2026 (adding a new PvE subtask, a nuclear strike end-of-round event, and AI improvements), and update 0.8.3 on August 12, 2026, which upgraded the game engine to Godot 4.7 and included substantial UI redesigns and AI refinements. The developer has shipped seven major content updates since the Early Access launch in August 2025, with the most recent substantive communication on August 12, 2026 — just nine days before today's assessment date. The pace of development shows no signs of slowing, and the game remains clearly unfinished with ongoing additions to core systems. The store description references leaderboard seasons and daily tasks, indicating ongoing live content cycles consistent with an actively developed Early Access title.

About this game

The early 2000s. After the collapse of the USSR, no unified state rose in its place. Scattered groups survive in the ruins of the former republics — each with their own order, codes, and morality. A global resource shortage has turned these lands into a magnet for marauders from across the world. Power belongs only to those who can hold it.

Lost Lives is a 2D side-scrolling shooter where you explore procedurally generated locations, fight AI and other players, collect loot and develop your character. The game features multiple modes set in post-Soviet locations, different enemy factions, a variety of weapons, and dynamic weather.

Features:

  • Five game modes. Co-op against bots for 1–4 players, Deathmatch PvP, Gun Game, Team Deathmatch, and Endless waves of enemies.

  • Procedural generation. Location layouts, loot placement, AI behavior, and time of day vary between sessions on select maps.

  • NATO and Warsaw Pact weaponry. Different recoil, accuracy, and handling characteristics. Armor-piercing rounds, grenades, and modifications.

  • Looting. Find items from the Soviet and post-Soviet era to sell or trade for better gear.

  • Gear. Body armor, helmets, and backpacks of various classes. Armor level and ammunition type determine the outcome of a fight.

  • Advanced AI. Bots act situationally: they advance, retreat, take cover, surrender, heal, use grenades, and operate in groups.

  • Factions. Several groups with their own interests and backstories.

  • Daily tasks. Objectives refresh every day, with rewards contributing to overall progression.

  • Leaderboards. Separate PvE and PvP rankings with seasons.

  • Weather and time of day. Dynamic conditions: day-night cycle, rain, fog.

  • Character customization. Clothing and cosmetic items unlock as you progress.

  • Voice chat. Proximity chat for talking to nearby players, plus a radio mode for team communication.

  • No aggressive monetization. No loot boxes, no battle passes, no gear for real money.
