Evaluation

Mango launched into Early Access and received regular monthly content updates throughout 2021, culminating in its full 1.0 release on November 23, 2021 (NEWS-8), which brought the complete ~40-level game out of Early Access. Since that launch, no additional content for Mango itself has been released or announced — the one DLC listed is the original soundtrack, which shipped on November 19, 2021 alongside the full release (DLC-1). The developer (Sad Mask Party) has remained active, but their subsequent work has been focused entirely on new games: they announced and released The Lotus Holidays in October 2023 (NEWS-7), announced and released Glitch Daddy in May 2024 (NEWS-4/5/6), and most recently announced and released The Liquid Jet in May 2025 (NEWS-1/2/3). None of these posts contain any mention of new content planned for Mango. The studio's pattern is to develop and ship standalone games sequentially, treating each as a complete, finished product at launch. Mango appears to have been released as a complete package in November 2021, with no post-launch content additions or announcements since then. Someone waiting for all content would consider the game fully playable and complete as of its November 23, 2021 release date.

About this game

Mango is a surrealist first-person adventure/puzzle game about art and derealization, featuring

  • * trippy, psychedelic visuals

  • * intense psychological and philosophical undertones

  • * fragmented, lore-rich storytelling

  • * experimental horror elements

  • * and last but not least, an overarching feeling of NEVER knowing what to expect.

It explores the idea of a mind losing its grasp with reality, as reality turns into a dream, and that dream turns into a nightmare. It has an off-kilter tone that can shift from overly chill to downright scary. Often it resembles an acid trip, or an interactive fever dream.

The game contains ~8 hours of gameplay with lots of freaky action, even more freaky fashion, deconstructed urban landscapes and/or dreamscapes, existential angst, questionable parenting, a bit of driving, and a fair load of straight-up madness.

It has been described as simultaneously dadaist and hyper-realist in nature, both alien and also deeply human, as well as the story of a life, filtered through the eyes of the mind.

Also, it has been described as WEIRD as hell ;)
