Evaluation
Masks of Deception launched in Early Access on June 17, 2022. After a rough start, the developer shipped several patches through August 2022 aimed at improving onboarding, adding AI threats, and balancing gameplay. However, the game never recovered commercially.
On January 17, 2024, the developer posted a candid statement confirming that the game had failed to find an audience, that Reflect Studios had lost money on it and moved on to other projects. They announced the game would become free-to-play on January 24, 2024 in hopes of attracting more players, but explicitly stated they have no plans to update or change the game — unless it somehow picks up significant popularity.
The game remains in Early Access on Steam as of today (June 22, 2026), meaning it has never reached a completed 1.0 release. The developer's last communication was January 17, 2024, and there have been no updates, patches, or announcements since then. The promised 1.0 completion has never been delivered, and the developer's own statement makes clear that active development has effectively ceased. This leaves the game in a state of uncertainty — still technically in Early Access, but with a developer who has publicly acknowledged moving on.
Evidence
Developer confirms the game failed commercially, that the studio has moved on to other projects, and that there are no plans to update or change the game. The game was made free-to-play on January 24, 2024 as a last-ditch effort, but development is effectively on indefinite hold.
Patch 0.3.2 added an Easy difficulty mode and paranormal zone/EVP recorder updates.

About this game
Masks of Deception is a 6 player horror game where you must use teamwork, equipment, and sensing abilities to identify then exorcize the demon in your group... or the demon will slay you first. You’ve been sent to disrupt and purge a demon before it claims three lives and fulfills its ritual. Purgers (innocents) must be cautious in performing their task as the demon isn’t the only one looking to slay them. Others silently patrol searching for victims outside ultraviolet protection, and some will attack only if you prompt them to.
As a Purger you’ll be traveling around the entire area looking for paranormal zones to investigate, making progress towards uncovering the Demon’s type. These zones appear and disappear in different locations as time goes on. While searching it can be easy to lose sight of teammates, offering the Demon an opportunity to perform a suspicious action. Trust must be earned and even then isn’t a guarantee. Keep everyone at an arm's reach until you can confirm they are who they claim to be.
For every three demon books the Demon collects and deposits on a summoning circle they’ll be able to kill one Purger. As your party dwindles the Demon’s identity will likely be exposed if you haven’t learned who it was already. Time is of the essence to figure out the Demon’s type, with both uncovered you can vote and cast the incantation to exorcize the Demon. Performed correctly the Demon will be purged from this world and the Purgers will win. However if the vote is cast incorrectly the Purgers will lose and the Demon will be freed. One chance is all you get, make it count.
Falling victim to one of the threats or the Demon isn’t the end. After death you respawn as a Ghost with separate tasks of destroying Demon Books and collecting Sacred Pages scattered around the area. If you manage to collect all 10 Sacred Pages and turn them in you and the Purgers will exorcize the Demon.
