Evaluation

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition launched on December 18, 2014 as a Steam port of the classic 2006 boxed title. Over the following years, the developer (Dovetail Games, working with Microsoft) and a network of third-party add-on studios steadily published an extensive library of 234 DLC packs — aircraft, scenery, weather tools, and mission content — with the final entry being the Boeing 767-200/300 Add-On, released on April 28, 2020. The most significant developer communication came on November 15, 2019, when the team posted that a new beta branch was being made available specifically to gather telemetry data "to help in the development of the new Microsoft Flight Simulator." This post made clear that the studio's attention had shifted to the next generation simulator. No new DLC or updates have been released since April 28, 2020, and no future content has been announced. All 234 listed DLC items are marked as released, with no unreleased entries on the store. The 2019 statement effectively signaled that FSX: Steam Edition was transitioning into a maintenance role rather than active content development. The complete absence of any communications or releases since April 2020 — over six years as of today — confirms the game has reached the end of its content lifecycle. This is a complete, finished product for those who want to play it today.

PLEASE NOTE

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX: Steam Edition) is functionally similar to the boxed version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X (MSFSX). We have worked extensively with third party developers to make sure the two products can work alongside each other, however due to the wide range of add-on products available for MSFSX, we cannot guarantee that your existing content will work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition.

The Flight Simulator X Software Development Kit (SDK) is not included with FSX: Steam Edition.

If you already have MSFSX installed on your PC and are concerned about running the two games alongside each other, you may wish to consider installing FSX: Steam Edition on a separate PC.

If you already have MSFSX and add-ons installed they will only be accessible through your existing installation. They will not be duplicated across the original edition and Steam Edition of the simulator.
