Evaluation

Mud and Blood has been in Early Access since November 30, 2021, developed by a solo developer (urb) who has maintained a consistent and impressive cadence of major updates throughout. The update history includes: patch 0.4.0 in November 2022, major content in April and September 2023, the large "No Mercy" mega patch in October 2024, a Trench Mode follow-up in October 2024, a holiday patch in December 2024, a demo update in January 2025, the major D-Day patch on June 7, 2025, a Summer Sale patch on June 29, 2025, and the Halloween-themed "Moongrave" feature patch on October 30, 2025 — the most recent developer communication on record. In that October 30, 2025 post, the developer explicitly confirmed that a 1.0 release remains an active goal, writing: "I'll get back to work on the rest of that patch now" and closing with "I'll see you soon with the 1.0 drop." This is a direct, unambiguous statement that the game is not yet complete and that further development — including a full launch — is still underway. As of today (October 8, 2026), the last developer communication was on October 30, 2025 — approximately 11 months ago. The developer's historical posting cadence has ranged from roughly monthly to several months between updates, with the largest gap between major content drops being roughly 13 months (from September 2023 to October 2024). The current 11-month silence is approaching but not yet clearly outside that established pattern for a solo developer. There are no signs of distress, no funding issues, and no closure announcements. The game continues to be purchasable and carries an Early Access flag.

About

Mud and Blood was, for the most part, created in an unlikely place: an outpost somewhere between Kandahar and Panjway, Afghanistan. Initially developed as a flash game by urb in between missions on a beat-up laptop, it became a way to decompress from the chaos. Ironically, a game about brutal, unforgiving war was itself forged in the heart of a conflict. What began as a personal project has since evolved into a cult classic, beloved by a fiercely loyal community for over 16 years.

At its core, Mud and Blood embraces a unique philosophy: challenge, not comfort. The gameplay is punishingly difficult, but it respects your tactical sense and cognitive ability. It doesn’t drip-feed you success to keep you engaged. Every decision matters, every mistake is costly, and every victory is hard-earned. This is a game that trusts its players to make tough calls on the fly, think critically, and persevere through chaos and loss.

In Mud and Blood, war is not heroic. It’s messy, unpredictable, and brutal. Yet amidst the carnage, there’s a raw beauty in the stories that emerge—a narrative forged by the player, much like the Dwarf Fortress of combat. Your experience becomes your own war story: a tale of triumph against an unrelenting enemy and the quiet pride of knowing you gave it everything you had.

Crafted with love, a touch of PTSD, and a deep respect for its community, Mud and Blood is a humble tribute to those who dare to face the impossible.
