Evaluation

Welcome Back, Commander launched on February 6, 2025 and received a substantial wave of post-launch updates through early 2026. The developer shipped numerous bug-fix and balance patches in the weeks after launch, followed by a major content update on March 21, 2025 (Update #16) that added the final boss missions and extra scenarios described in the post-launch roadmap. A Supporter Edition DLC launched on November 13, 2025, adding a customization mode with gameplay modifiers. The most recent major update arrived on February 17, 2026, adding special "boss scenario" missions to both the base game and the Supporter DLC. On April 15, 2025, the developer published a candid studio update explaining that sales were below expectations and that the two founding partners had parted ways. Each is now working on separate new games. The February 17, 2026 update post promotes a new game ("Horizon 1990") and describes the boss scenario content as extra content added on top of the game's original scope — there is no roadmap, no announced future DLC, and no indication of ongoing content development for Welcome Back, Commander specifically. The only DLC on the store (the Supporter Edition) has been released. No unreleased DLC is listed, no roadmap for future content exists, and the developer's communications since February 2026 have shifted focus entirely to new projects. The game appears to have reached the end of its content development cycle with the February 17, 2026 update.
Evidence
Major update adding boss scenario missions to the base game and Supporter DLC, alongside a call to wishlist the developer's new game 'Horizon 1990'. No further content for Welcome Back, Commander is announced.

PROTIP: always find an exit first before doing your looting spree.

If you ever wanted to feel like a military commander, now is your chance.

A mysterious deadly plague has infected the city of Sun Stone, and all communications with the city administration have been cut off.

You are the appointed commander who must assemble a strike team and deploy them within the epicenter to find answers before the plague spreads beyond the city limits.

You will get to make strategic decisions that will impact the status, supplies, and sanity of your squad, and tactical decisions that will impact the survival chances of your strike team during combat engagement with the creatures.

The lives of your men are in your hands and the story will be shaped according to your choices.

The game is rather short but emphasizes the replayability factor making each playthrough as unique and fresh as possible by giving you different new games

bonus options, a bit of randomly generated content, achievements with rewards on the next game, multiple strategic choices with various outcomes, multiple paths, multiple endings and multiple ways to play.

Fair Warning: the game can become very hard if you get too greedy.

The game contains 5 chapters represented by the 5 stages of DEFCON:

DEFCON 5  - the initial stage of the outbreak, the first contact of the strike team with the quarantine city.

DEFCON 4 - things spice up, new types of infected appear, maps become bigger, and event pools refresh.

DEFCON 3 - here there will be all Bosses encounters. Think outside the box.

DEFCON 2 - all you learned so far and more, maps become bigger, all stakes are amplified, and difficulty is increased.

DEFCON 1 - all choices you made so far in the game since the beginning will now have a direct impact on the gameplay and on the ending cutscene.

Each difficulty setting has its unique layout in how many days each DEFCON has.

The game has a Lovecraftian - Military theme, mixing Real-time strategy gameplay with heavy Horror elements.

                                                        Good luck Commander!
