Evaluation
Myst (the 2021 Cyan Worlds remake) launched on August 26, 2021 and has received updates ever since, including two major free content additions: the Patch 2.0 engine overhaul on October 28, 2024, and the Age of Rime on March 20–28, 2025.
On July 8, 2026 — today — Cyan published a Devlog explicitly addressing the future of this remake. Rather than announcing new content, the post discusses a potential future engine upgrade from Unreal Engine 5.3.2 to 5.8, framing it as a technical maintenance effort rather than a content expansion. Critically, they state that "we cannot give any kind of estimate or timeline as to when this major update will occur" and that it is "at the very least, many months away." They describe themselves as "a very small team" and frame the engine upgrade as a compatibility necessity, not a vehicle for delivering new gameplay content.
This is a Tier 1 developer statement. The post does not announce any new Ages, story content, puzzles, or gameplay features. It describes only the possibility of an engine update for compatibility and performance reasons — the same kind of maintenance work the developer has always done. There is no roadmap, no named future content, and no promise of additional gameplay beyond what has already shipped. The Age of Rime, released on March 28, 2025, remains the final piece of content added to the game.
With no announced future content, no unreleased DLC, and a direct developer statement that the game's future consists only of a speculative technical upgrade, the content for this remake is now complete. The game remains purchasable and will continue to receive maintenance patches, but the developer has not communicated any plans for additional gameplay content.
Evidence
Cyan published a devlog on the future of Myst and Riven. The post describes only a potential engine upgrade (Unreal 5.3.2 to 5.8) for compatibility and performance reasons, with no timeline and no new content announced. They describe themselves as a very small team and frame the upgrade as a technical maintenance consideration, not a content roadmap.
The Age of Rime — a new explorable Age with original environments, puzzles, narrative content, and lore — was released as a free major content update. This is the most recent major content addition to the game.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Do I need a VR headset to play Myst?
A: You do not need a VR headset to play Myst. Myst is playable with or without a VR headset.
Q: I bought Myst when it first came out in 1993. Can I get a free upgrade to this new version?
A: Thank you for your support over the years! We are not giving out free upgrades to previous purchasers of the original Myst. We put a lot of effort into making this new version of Myst and would appreciate your financial support again!
Q: I want to play Myst, but am concerned about my computer not meeting the minimum requirements. What should I do?
A: If your machine does not meet the minimum requirements and you still want to try Myst out, we recommend enabling one of our supersampling options through the graphics settings menu to see if it alleviates performance concerns. Depending on the storefront you purchase Myst from, you may be able to qualify for a refund through the store (not through Cyan support) if Myst does not run well on your platform. Please review each store platform refund policy for details.
Q: Will Myst support [insert language here] one day?
A: Possibly! We’d love to hear from you through our support team about any languages you’d like for us to support.
