Evaluation
OpenTTD is a free, open-source business simulation game that has been in continuous, active development since its Steam release on April 1, 2021. The project ships major numbered releases on a consistent annual cadence: version 12.0 arrived October 17, 2021; version 14.0 on April 13, 2024; and version 15.0 on January 1, 2026. Each major release introduces substantial new features — version 14.0 added a new ship pathfinder, vehicle unbunching, and social platform integration, while 15.0 brought infinite water island maps, river wetlands, bridges over stations, and road waypoints.
The team is now actively developing version 16.0: beta1 shipped June 25, 2026 (introducing backwards-driving trains, improved map generation, and numerous other features), and beta2 followed on July 12, 2026 with additional fixes and the doubling of the maximum vehicle limit. The store description explicitly states "OpenTTD is under ongoing development," and a bug-fix post from April 4, 2026 confirmed the team was "hard at work on features for OpenTTD 16."
In March 2026, there was a notable distribution change: OpenTTD is no longer sold as a standalone product on Steam and is now bundled with Atari's re-released Transport Tycoon Deluxe. A developer statement on March 19, 2026 clarified this reflects a mutually agreed compromise, that the OpenTTD project "retains its full independence," and that "we will continue to deliver new versions of OpenTTD to all platforms, including Steam." Existing Steam owners continue to receive updates normally. This change has not affected development activity, as evidenced by the continued release of 16.0 betas in June and July 2026.

About this game
OpenTTD is a business simulation game in which players earn money by transporting passengers and cargo via road, rail, water, and air. It is an open-source remake and expansion of the 1995 Chris Sawyer video game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
Connect industries and cities on procedurally-generated maps of up to 4096 x 4096 tiles by building a network of roads, railways, docks, and airports. Navigate dense city streets, cross oceans and rivers, and conquer high mountains in one of four climates.
Work alone or with friends to complete production chains and transport finished goods to towns. Assemble a fleet of hundreds of vehicles, transferring cargo as needed in an interconnected, multimodal network with optional cargo destinations.
Keep up with technological improvements through the years as towns grow; new modes of transport are invented; and industries appear, change production, or fail. Expand stations and build network capacity to keep up with demand and avoid delays.
Customize your OpenTTD experience via community-made mods downloaded through an in-game content service, including real-world vehicles, new industry sets, custom scenarios, and more.
