Evaluation

Orion Trail launched out of Early Access on October 12, 2015, after a period of active development with frequent feature patches throughout August–October 2015. Following launch, the developer shipped two notable post-launch updates: a content update on December 21, 2015 (new captains, officers, encounters, crises, and a Captain Forever crossover), and a January 10, 2017 update adding Steam Trading Cards, a price reduction, and mid-mission saving. That January 2017 post is the last recorded developer communication of any kind. No further updates, announcements, or roadmap posts have appeared since then. There are no unreleased DLC listings on the store, no announced future content, and no developer statement about ongoing plans. The store description makes no mention of future updates or ongoing content. With over nine years of silence since the last update on January 10, 2017, the game is best understood as a finished product that received post-launch support through early 2017 and has been complete since then.
Evidence
Final recorded developer communication: added Steam Trading Cards, reduced base price to $7.99, upgraded to Unity 5.4, and released a beta for mid-mission saving. No future content mentioned.

About this game

Dare to travel the absurd and dangerous Orion Trail, where only the luckiest, bravest, and most stubborn captains will make it all the way to the end. Come face the terrible and weird Synapsion Brain Beast. Cower before the pedantic might of Baxxtor the Instructor. Submit to the overwhelming cuteness of the three eyed Warp Weasel. Become famously incredible or incredibly dead!

Ultra Cool Space Features

  • A high-stakes and hilarious journey through the strange, stupid and terrifying locales of the Orion Trail!
  • Choose your crew, name them after your friends, and watch them die! Heroically! Or, you know, maybe they’ll survive. Anything can happen!
  • Tons of random encounters, each with a variety of options and outcomes. You’ll probably never encounter the same thing twice! You might, though.
  • Away Missions! Send an Officer (with a few of your invaluably expendable Redshirts) into the fray. The rewards are great, but so is the risk…
  • Carefully manage your Resources: Food, Fuel, Hull, and Redshirts. Curse loudly as they’re whittled away.
  • Play to your strengths! Each captain, and officer provide different bonuses to increase your chances of success.
  • Succumb to the chaos of the Probability Drive. You can rely on your Crew’s abilities, but there are no certainties in space.
  • Chiptune soundtrack by Rainbow Kitten.
  • Gorgeous retro pixel art.
