Evaluation

Papetura launched on May 7, 2021 after six years of development. Following launch, the developer shipped several updates: a major engine and visuals update in August 2021, the Soundtrack and Artbook DLC on September 28, 2021, and a significant gamepad/SteamDeck compatibility update on September 8, 2022. The only DLC listed on the store (the Soundtrack and Artbook) has been released. The developer's post-launch communications were focused on polish and bug fixing, not on new story content or expansions. The June 2021 developer note about "continuing to make the game a little better" was framed around bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements — and that promise was fulfilled by the August 2021 and September 2022 updates. There has been no announcement of any new story content, expansions, or future updates for Papetura. Most tellingly, by May 2024 the developer publicly announced a brand new game called Pirofauna, signalling that their creative focus has moved on. In November 2024, a physical edition of Papetura launched through a third-party publisher, which is typically a milestone that marks a game as a finished, complete product. The last developer-driven update to the game itself was the gamepad patch on September 8, 2022. All of this points to Papetura being a complete, finished experience with no further content planned.

Along with atmospheric music made by Floex, it creates a mysterious and unique paper world, shrouded in shadow and light.

Features
  • Unique point and click adventure experience, for about 2 hours.
  • Everything is made out of paper, from tiny insects, strange creatures and monsters to truly magical locations,
  • Atmospheric and beautiful music is made by Floex - Tomas Dvorak,
  • Puzzles are a part of the story and the world,
  • The story is told by animation and strange noises, there are no dialogues.

The Story
Papetura tells a story about lonely paper creature Pape, trapped in a flowery prison. One day Pape escapes and finds little Tura, a magical being that he’ll take care of. Together they will have to face dark and flaming monsters which will try to burn down their beloved paper world.

The Team
The team consists of the creator Tomasz Ostafin (Petums), music artist Tomas Dvorak (Floex), and sound designer Juraj Mravec. The game was being made for many years, inspired by old classic games like The Neverhood, Machinarium, movies of studio Ghibli, and fascination with architecture and paper sculptures.
