Pillars of Eternity launched on March 26, 2015 and received two major paid expansions: The White March – Part I (August 25, 2015) and The White March – Part II (February 16, 2016). Following Part II's release, lead designer Josh Sawyer publicly stated in a March 2016 interview that the team was wrapping up the original game and transitioning to new projects — a clear signal that planned expansion content was complete. On November 15, 2017, Obsidian released the Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition, bundling the base game, both expansions, all premium extras, and a new free Deadfire Pack DLC tied to the upcoming sequel. This marked the formal completion of the game's content lifecycle. All three DLC items listed on the store are released, and none are pending. The game has continued to receive technical maintenance well after that point. A major engine upgrade to Unity 2019.4.11 and DirectX 11 was released in June 2024, and most recently a Turn-Based Mode — a substantial new gameplay feature — was added in April 2026, followed by a polish patch in May 2026. The developer noted they would "continue to release patches for this feature for a short while longer," indicating focused wrap-up work rather than an ongoing content program. These updates represent technical enhancements to an otherwise complete game, not new story or expansion content.
