Evaluation

Prehistoric Kingdom is a fully active Early Access title with a clear and detailed roadmap toward its 1.0 launch. Update 17 shipped on June 25, 2026 — described by the developer as the largest update released so far — bringing dynamic animal combat and hunting, eight new species across three dinosaur genera (Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus), injuries and scarring, staff workzones, a promotion system, and major water rendering improvements. On August 1, 2026, the development team published their July diary confirming the next steps: a patch (Update 17.1) targeting August 2026 with bug fixes, stability improvements, enclosure renaming, and additional partner animations; and Update 18, explicitly described as "our last major update before Prehistoric Kingdom leaves Early Access next year." Update 18 will introduce security staff, engineers, animal breakouts for Challenge Mode, expanded nature requirements (four nature types: forest, shrubs, plains, and barren), a wetland biome expansion with over 40 new plants, new animals including Baryonyx, and an expanded management view. The developer is targeting Q4 2026 for Update 18. The full 1.0 release remains on track for 2027, as confirmed in both the January 2026 and June 2026 developer diaries. The 1.0 launch will bring additional animals (including the long-horned bison, steppe bison, Megatherium, and others teased but not yet named), a Story Campaign, Missions with Gold Rank objectives, improved controller support, and more. The team has maintained a consistent pattern of major updates since early 2025: Update 14 in April 2025, Update 15 in August 2025, Update 16 in December 2025, and Update 17 in June 2026 — roughly every 3–4 months. Development is clearly ongoing and well-communicated, with no signs of distress or silence.
Evidence
July 2026 developer diary confirms Update 17.1 patch coming in August, and details Update 18 as the final major Early Access update targeting Q4 2026, introducing security, breakouts, expanded nature requirements (4 nature types), a wetland biome overhaul with 40+ new plants, and new animals including Baryonyx. States the game will leave Early Access 'next year.'

About this game

Take on the role of park manager and design the ultimate zoo for nature's greatest creations.

Discover, incubate and release dozens of extinct species to build a successful park that can keep up with the growing demands of guests, staff and hungry animals.

From the majestic Woolly Mammoth to the mighty Spinosaurus, undo the rules of extinction by reviving a diverse selection of over 50 species of prehistoric wildlife.

Watch as they seamlessly grow from baby to adult; changing their proportions, sounds and behaviors in realtime. They'll need to eat, drink, sleep and satisfy their social needs through dynamic behaviors like herding and socialization.

Design stunning parks across an enormous playable area to draw in crowds from all over the world. Carve rivers, raise mountains or build facilities piece-by-piece with precise creative tools.

Choose from a selection of themed prefabs or use the Steam Workshop to share or download ready-made structures like restaurants, toilets and viewing platforms.

Prepare your zoo with logistics management, strategically placing key infrastructure to optimize its efficiency.

Import or generate resources and deliver them throughout the zoo with trainable staff to ensure your kiosks and feeders remain stocked. Don't forget to clean those dung piles!

Get up close and personal with First Person Mode and explore your zoo from a different persective. Take a look through binoculars, enter habitats or even stop to sit on a bench with this immersive and interactive mode.
