Evaluation

Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut was released on May 21, 2014 and is itself the definitive version of the original 2012 Q.U.B.E. — the store description explicitly calls it "the definitive version of the indie puzzler Q.U.B.E." It bundled a completely new story, a time-trial mode, new music, and new achievements on top of the original game's content. It launched as a complete, finished product with no post-launch content cycle of its own. The broader Q.U.B.E. franchise has continued to evolve: Toxic Games released Q.U.B.E. 2 in March 2018 (a full sequel), and in September 2022 released Q.U.B.E. 10th Anniversary — a ground-up remake that includes the Director's Cut content, the original 2012 version, a brand new chapter (Sector 8), and various extras. The store description for Director's Cut itself links to both of these. In 2023–2024, Toxic Games also released Q.U.B.E. Create, a level editor for the 10th Anniversary edition, which reached v1.0 in May 2024. None of this activity represents new content for Director's Cut itself — it is all activity on separate products. Director's Cut launched as a complete definitive package in 2014 and has received no post-launch updates or DLC of its own. The game's content was complete on its release date.

The All New Story
To reboot the narrative, Toxic Games brought in industry veteran Rob Yescombe, writer on franchises including CRYSIS, ALIEN: ISOLATION, STAR WARS and PS4’s upcoming RIME; winner of Best Thriller Screenplay at the Creative World Awards, and the screenwriting Award of Excellence at the Canada International Film Festival.

“The Director’s Cut is a single-location thriller” says Yescombe, “It’s about figuring out what the Qube is, and why you’re inside it. You’re told you are an astronaut inside some kind of alien structure hurtling towards Earth, but it’s also about something deeper than that.”
Under the surface, there is a subtext about games themselves – “We are conditioned to expect death and doom. We’re resigned to it. At its heart, this story is about that state of mind and how it effects the way we view our experiences, in games and in life. The Director’s Cut will feel either heroic or unnerving, depending on your own personal trust issues.”
