R-Type Final 2 launched on April 30, 2021 and has been treated as an evolving platform by developer Granzella ever since. Early in its life, the studio announced sweeping free updates originally called "R-Type Final 3," which were later delivered as the "R-Type Final 2.5" update series — bringing new stages, ships, multiplayer infrastructure, difficulty tiers, and extensive customization systems across multiple patches in 2022 and 2023. All 19 DLC items are released, with the most recent paid DLC (B-99 APOCALYPSE) shipping on October 2, 2023. The store description confirms the "R-Type Final 3 Patch" is included.
Beyond paid DLC, Granzella has continued delivering meaningful free content updates on a roughly annual cadence: version 2.0.1 (August 21, 2023) added two new stages and ships; version 2.0.3 (August 9, 2024) added a new humanoid fighter and gameplay options; version 2.0.4 (August 20, 2025) added the Boss Rush Course mode, a new player ship from a community poll, a brand-new "FIRST STEP" difficulty level, and additional cosmetics; and version 2.0.5 (August 25, 2026) — released just one day ago — added another new player ship (the "B-1D/0 BYDO SYSTEM ZERO," also chosen via community poll), anniversary decals, new background graphics, and shop items. This anniversary update explicitly celebrates both the 5th anniversary of R-Type Final 2 and the 3rd anniversary of R-Type Final 3 Evolved, indicating the developer continues to actively engage with the game. The developer has made no statement that development has concluded.
