Evaluation
RetroArch is a free, open-source emulator frontend that has received a long and consistent series of major version releases since its Steam launch in May 2022. The documented major releases include: 1.10.0 (January 2022), 1.11.0 (September 2022), 1.14.0 (December 2022), 1.15.0 (March 2023), 1.17.0 (February 2024), 1.20.0 (January 2025), and 1.21.0 (April 30, 2025). Each release brings substantial new capabilities — cloud sync support, new audio drivers (including PipeWire), major netplay improvements, shader enhancements, new platform support (macOS added in March 2023), and UI overhauls. The developer also adds new emulator cores as free DLC; all 65 currently listed cores are released, with the most recent additions arriving in May 2024. In March 2023, Libretro published a development diary explicitly discussing future plans and software directions.
The historical interval between major releases ranges from roughly 2 to 6 months. The most recent major release was on April 30, 2025 — approximately 17 months before today's date of October 1, 2026. This is beyond the upper end of the established cadence window. However, RetroArch is a long-running open-source project with no developer statement indicating development has ended, no completion announcement, and no "final update" communication of any kind. The silence threshold calculation is relevant here: the longest gap between observed major releases across the full history is roughly 8–9 months (from the March 2023 release to the February 2024 release). Seventeen months of silence from April 2025 to October 2026 exceeds the 3x cadence multiplier of that gap (approximately 24–27 months) only marginally, and the 6-month ceiling silence threshold was passed. This pushes toward uncertainty, but without any developer distress signal or shutdown announcement, and given the open-source nature of the project with its historically irregular but sustained output, the evidence does not rise to the level of a development_uncertain signal. The developer has made no outstanding commitments (no announced unshipped content), so the cadence table points to completion — but the absence of any "final update" statement from the developer means this conclusion is uncertain. On balance, the sustained multi-year pattern and lack of any closure signal support continued active development as the most accurate characterization, with medium confidence reflecting the extended silence since April 2025.

About this game

RetroArch is an open source and cross platform frontend/framework for game engines, video games, media players and other applications.
While it can do many things besides this, it is most widely known for enabling you to run classic games on a wide range of computers and consoles through a slick graphical interface. Settings are also unified so configuration is done once and for all.
In addition to this, you will soon be able to run original game discs (CDs) from RetroArch. We take videogame preservation seriously and want to ensure you can run your originally bought content on modern day PCs.
RetroArch has advanced features like shaders, netplay, rewinding, next-frame response times, runahead, and more!

Maybe there is no rewind in real life, but there is a rewind in RetroArch! You can go back in time and correct your mistakes!

Seeing things as we remembered was our first priority, so with our Shading feature, you can change colors, smooth pixels or recreate your bedroom TV from 1995!

You think the excitement of playing elbow-to-elbow with friends is a bygone memory? No! With our rollback-based, latency-hiding Netplay, your Player 2 is beside you again! Fight the competition not the lag!
