Evaluation
Return launched on Steam on May 29, 2023. Following launch, developer Dead Unicorn (a one-person studio) committed to expanding the game in response to feedback that it was too short, and delivered on that commitment with two major content updates: The Fallen King Update (version 1.1, June 29, 2023) and The Mechanist Update (version 1.2, November 21, 2023). Both updates added new areas, enemies, bosses, and weapons.
After the second content update, the developer shifted focus to porting the game to Nintendo Switch, which launched on May 17, 2024. The Switch release post noted "another BIG announcement this week," but no subsequent announcement of new content for the base game has appeared in the developer's communications since then.
Notably, the November 2023 post following The Mechanist Update already pointed toward the developer's next game, Blood Running, signaling a gradual wind-down of active Return development. The June 2023 post after the first content update also stated that further content beyond quality-of-life work was conditional on sales performance. No new content has been announced, no unreleased DLC is listed on the store, and the last developer communication was the Switch launch post on May 13, 2024. There is no sustained pattern suggesting more content is forthcoming — the two post-launch content updates appear to have fulfilled the developer's stated commitment to expanding the game, and the studio has since moved on to its next title.
Evidence
The Mechanist Update (v1.2) shipped new Shore locations, 3 enemies, 1 boss, 3 weapons, and 4 grimoire. Post also promoted the developer's next game, Blood Running, signaling attention shifting away from Return.
The Fallen King Update (v1.1) shipped new locations, enemies, a boss, a weapon, and new lore. Post stated further content would depend on sales performance.
