Evaluation

RUBATO launched on March 20, 2026 as a complete 2D physics-based collect-a-thon. The developer, dconn, has been actively updating the game ever since. Day-one patches shipped immediately after launch, followed by a major "Director's Cut Part 1" update (v1.2) on June 30, 2026, which brought rewritten cutscenes, a new map system, hard mode, cutscene and FMV skipping, volume mixing, and a wide range of other improvements. On August 1, 2026, dconn posted a detailed update confirming that v1.3 is in active development. Originally scoped as a second director's cut patch, it has grown into a comprehensive revamp of the final third of the game — replacing content outright rather than simply polishing it — along with character controller improvements and refinements across every area. The developer stated that the release date and a full overview will be announced once production is complete, and noted that it will release closer in tandem with a console version. As of September 10, 2026, dconn posted again to confirm that work on v1.3 is continuing and consuming nearly all of their time, though no release date has been set. The developer described this as the most challenging phase of development so far, but expressed renewed enthusiasm for the project. The August 1 post also confirmed that a second volume of the game's soundtrack will be released after v1.3. The developer explicitly stated that after v1.3 ships, feature additions and changes to RUBATO will stop — with only localization work remaining. In short, v1.3 is a confirmed, named, actively developed update with substantial content changes on the way. The developer remains engaged and communicating regularly, with the most recent post on September 10, 2026.

About this game

RUBATO, an experimental, 2D physics-based take on the collect-a-thon genre!

The year is 12,012. Multiquadrillionaire monopoly "GSSAI CO." has been in power of the universe for centuries after a world-ending bioweapon was unleashed onto the masses. And now? The solar system has been destroyed by unknown celestial forces. A weapons development program run by the Earth subsidiary of "GSSAI CO." is fast progressing. And the world's denizens are disappearing.

That is until one man screws up a game of pool.

HERO OF THE STARS AND THE SKY

  • Use your tongue to lick enemies and objects as you make your way through open metroidvania-like areas, whilst collecting "Planet Bits" to help fix the solar system!

WELCOME TO RUBATO WORLD

  • 5 compact, densely packed areas ranging from a huge sprawling bakery to the world's most poorly planned city. Uncover secrets and shortcuts in every corner of the world.

IF I COULD ONLY LOVE

  • A strange, funny plot with a deep focus on humour and character writing. It gets silly. It gets serious. Really concerningly serious. Uh. Is the guy who made this game okay..?

BUT FIRST, LOVE YOURSELF

  • To save the world, you must save yourself first. Find yourself again.

RUBATO contains flashing lights which may not be suitable for people with photosensitive epilepsy.
