Evaluation
Shadows on the Vatican was designed as a four-act series. Act I: Greed launched on June 9, 2014, and Act II: Wrath followed on October 23, 2015. A spinoff prequel, Nightingale, released in July 2021. In July 2022, the developer officially announced Act III: Sloth for PC in 2023, with a dedicated Steam store page — making clear the series is ongoing.
The most significant update since the previous evaluation is a detailed development status post published on June 29, 2026, in which the developer shared a breakdown of Act III's current progress: writing and game design at 99%, programming at 90%, character art at 90%, backgrounds at 85%, animations at 20%, motion comics at 5%, and audio at 10%. They identified the hand-crafted, animated motion comics and cutscenes as the most demanding remaining stage. The studio reaffirmed its commitment to finishing the game, stating they "truly believe in the story" and promising to be "in touch again soon with more news."
This update resolves the uncertainty from the previous evaluation about whether the studio was still actively working on Act III — they clearly are, and they provided specific progress figures. However, with animations at 20%, motion comics at 5%, and audio at 10%, the game remains a meaningful distance from completion, and no release date or window has been given. The 2023 target announced back in July 2022 has now been missed by several years.
The series was explicitly designed as a four-act story, and the developer has consistently maintained that Act III (and by extension Act IV) is coming. This is a long-running commitment that has taken significantly longer than planned, and while the studio remains active and engaged as recently as June 29, 2026, the lack of any release date and the remaining work still to be done means the situation warrants caution for anyone waiting on the complete series.

About this game
Visiting Rome from Chicago, where he works as a doctor, ex-priest James Murphy answers a mysterious call for help from his friend Cristoforo. The disappearance of a briefcase containing compromising documents is enough to convince James that his friend is a victim of something shady and sinister. The Vatican's involvement and some strange parallels with his own traumatic past inspire James to get to the bottom of this mystery.
Along this dangerous and disturbing path, James finds the most unlikely travelling companion who will question his deepest beliefs. And so the two characters begin both a physical journey in search of the truth, and a metaphysical exploration of the inner soul and the darkest secrets that everyone hides, even a "champion of the faith" like James.
Rome is the stage for this adventure – a city bathed in eternal twilight, its skies tinted the color of blood spilled in more than thirty years of intrigue: blood of innocents and guilty, unknown and famous victims alike.
