Shores Unknown entered Steam Early Access on February 17, 2021 as an unfinished RPG, with the developer explicitly committing to deliver the full story across multiple content updates before a 1.0 release. The game shipped three major content updates in its first year: Content Update #1 (June 1, 2021), Content Update #2 (October 4, 2021), and Content Update #3 (November 24, 2021). This established an active development pace through late 2021. In March 2022, the developer announced a development hiatus. Then on August 24, 2022, they posted a recovery update confirming development was resuming, with Chapter 3 targeted for Q3 2022. That post also disclosed that the team had shrunk to essentially one developer working regularly, with others contributing only occasionally. Despite the optimistic tone and specific timeline, no further official posts have appeared since August 24, 2022 — nearly four years of silence as of June 26, 2026. The game remains in Early Access, still purchasable on Steam, with no developer confirmation that Chapter 3 shipped, no announcement of a 1.0 release, and no communication of any kind since that August 2022 post. The original roadmap promised a complete story conclusion as part of the Early Access journey, and that content has not been confirmed as delivered. The combination of an unmet release target, a severely reduced team, and almost four years of silence makes the current development status deeply uncertain.
