Evaluation
Soldat is a long-running free-to-play 2D multiplayer shooter that arrived on Steam on April 15, 2020, though the game itself has existed for over two decades. The original developer, Michał Marcinkowski (MM), made a decisive statement on May 25, 2022: he announced he was handing over management of Soldat to a new community team, explaining that his own efforts were "entirely focused on Soldat 2." He framed this as a deliberate handoff — the new team planned to fix long-standing bugs and community issues, but there was no announcement of new content for Soldat itself. No major content updates, feature patches, or developer communications have appeared on the Soldat Steam page since that May 2022 handoff. The subsequent posts (September 2025 and February 2026) are promotional announcements for Jackal, a separate new game from the same creator, posted on the Soldat page as a courtesy to its audience. These posts are not communications about Soldat's development. The only DLC listed — a voluntary "tip for the developer" — shipped on April 23, 2020, and no new DLC has been announced. The game's store description presents it as a complete product with a defined weapon count, map count, and game modes, with no mention of planned additions. The open-source release of version 1.8 in May 2020 further supports the picture of a game that has been handed to the community in a finished state. With the developer having publicly stepped away from Soldat in May 2022 and no content updates or commitments since, the game is complete.
Evidence
Developer MM announced he is handing over Soldat to a new community management team, stating his efforts are entirely focused on Soldat 2. No new content for Soldat was announced — the transition was framed as maintenance and community fixes only.
Soldat 1.8 source code released as open source. Developer noted the public version on Steam differs from 1.8, and invited community contributions. Developer signed off by saying he was returning to work on Soldat 2.
