Evaluation
The Forest graduated from Early Access to its full 1.0 release on April 30, 2018, after roughly four years of development. At launch, Endnight Games announced that a free VR update would follow on May 22, 2018 — and it did, shipping as promised.
After launch, the team continued with bug fix and feature patches through 2018, culminating in version 1.10 on December 10, 2018. That update added new buildables, caves, a new weapon type, and two new late-game creatures — the last substantive content addition the developer has made to the game. Since then, the only developer communications have been maintenance-level bug fix patches, with the most recent being a Unity security update on October 3, 2025, which was explicitly described as a minor engine-level fix not affecting the base game itself.
The developer has not announced any future content for The Forest, there are no unreleased DLC entries, and the news history shows no major content releases after December 2018 — now well over seven years ago. The sustained post-launch update activity has clearly ceased, with only occasional security and compatibility maintenance continuing. Endnight's development focus has shifted to their sequel, Sons of the Forest. The game launched as a complete, finished product and all post-launch content has shipped.

- Chop down trees to build a camp, or start a fire to keep warm. Scavenge food to keep yourself from starving.
- Build a small shelter or a large ocean side fortress. Lay traps and defences to keep a safe perimeter.
- Explore and build during the day. Defend your base at night. Craft weapons and tools. Bunker down during the evening or bring the fight directly to the enemy.
- Defend yourself against a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have beliefs, families, morals and that appear almost human.
- Use stealth to evade enemies, or engage them directly with crude weapons built from sticks and stones.
