On September 30, 2026 itself, Update 49.6 shipped — and its patch notes announced that a new expansion, The Wolves of Mordor, is now available for pre-purchase, with players already receiving early access to a new "Neighbours" feature as a pre-purchase benefit. This is a concrete, developer-published announcement of incoming content. Earlier in September, Update 49.5 (September 2, 2026) launched a new seasonal Legendary Items Reward Track and PvMP Reward Track running through December 2, 2026, along with an update to the Legendary World servers. On August 17, 2026, the developer published a detailed roadmap for their Angmar and Mordor Legendary World servers, outlining four specific content milestones between September 2026 and January 13, 2027, including level cap increases and new expansion content (Minas Morgul, War of Three Peaks, Blood of Azog, Gundabad, and King's Gondor East), followed by free character transfers through March 30, 2027. The broader pattern is unmistakable: the Kingdoms of Harad expansion launched December 3, 2025, raising the level cap to 160 and adding over 400 quests and four new regions. Before that, Update 44 (April 23, 2025), Update 43 (February 27, 2025), and many others continued a years-long cadence of major content drops. The game features rotating lootboxes, a VIP subscription, monetized LOTRO Store items, and seasonal reward tracks — all structural features of a game designed for indefinite ongoing operation. With a new expansion (The Wolves of Mordor) actively being marketed for pre-purchase as of today and a confirmed roadmap of content through early 2027, there is no indication of any end to development.
