Evaluation

The Spatials launched on Steam on March 30, 2015 and received a handful of feature patches in 2015 (versions 2.7 and 2.8). The developer then spent most of 2015–2016 building a heavily expanded follow-up, ultimately announced on May 28, 2016 as a separate game: The Spatials: Galactology. Galactology was positioned as the spiritual successor and next-generation version of The Spatials, and existing owners were offered a free copy. This effectively marked the end of development on the original game — the studio's energy fully shifted to Galactology and, later, to an entirely different project (NIMBY Rails, announced March 16, 2020). There are no unreleased DLC entries for The Spatials, no roadmap or promises of future content for it, and no developer communication about the original game since the Galactology announcement in May 2016. The studio's last news posts on this store page (March and June 2020) are purely about NIMBY Rails and contain no reference to The Spatials. With development having conclusively moved on and no outstanding content commitments, the original game is a complete, finished product. The Galactology announcement serves as the natural endpoint for this title's content lifecycle.
Evidence
Developer announced an entirely new game, NIMBY Rails, with no mention of further work on The Spatials.

About Weird and Wry

Based in Barcelona, Weird and Wry is a game development studio founded in 2014 by two brothers: Carlos and Max Carrasco. Together, Carlos (programmer) and Max (artist) share a taste for sims and classic gameplay -- which is easy to see in The Spatials, their first project. Inspired by the great classic sim games of the '90s, The Spatials combines classic base-building gameplay (based on isometric tile room building) with a real-time combat system and an exploration campaign. After publishing version 1.0 in mid 2014, Carlos and Max saw the potential of their idea and developed a much improved second version with Early Access starting in August 2014. In October 2014, the game was approved for release on Steam. In 2015, The Spatials continued to grow in popularity -- featured in Let's Plays from YouTubers and articles in major sites such as Rock Paper Shotgun.
