Evaluation

Planetbase launched on October 15, 2015 and received substantive post-launch updates: a major content update (Version 1.1.0) on March 23, 2016 that added a new planet, new structures, disasters, and significant gameplay changes, followed by a feature patch (Version 1.3.0) on August 24, 2018 that overhauled the UI and added quality-of-life improvements. There have been no further content updates to Planetbase 1 since August 24, 2018 — now nearly eight years ago. The developer's focus has entirely shifted to the sequel. On March 17, 2025, Madruga Works officially announced Planetbase 2 (a separate Steam product), noting that they are "revisiting the Planetbase idea" with expanded scope and resources. Since then, they have published seven development update posts for Planetbase 2, with the most recent on June 4, 2026. These updates describe an actively developing sequel that is still pre-release — art production is ongoing, with the developer targeting completion of all 3D art before the end of summer 2026 for subsequent testing. Planetbase 1 itself is a complete, finished product. No DLC has ever been listed, no future content for the original game has been announced, and the developer has made no indication of returning to update it. The game shipped and received meaningful post-launch support that concluded by mid-2018.
Evidence
Madruga Works officially announced Planetbase 2 as a separate new game in active development, citing the original Planetbase as a completed foundation they are now expanding upon.

About this game

Planetbase is a strategy game where you guide a group of space settlers trying to establish an outpost on a remote planet.

In the game you play the role of the base architect and manager, telling your colonists where to build the structures they will need to survive. You will have to ensure that they have a constant supply of oxygen, food and water to stay alive.

You will get them to collect energy, extract water, mine metal, grow food, manufacture bots, and build a fully self-sufficient base in a harsh environment, where you are always one step away from total failure.

Even if the game is not intended to be a simulator, all the mechanics are plausible, and based on what the expected challenges of establishing a colony in an new planet would be.

Features:

  • Four different planets with different conditions and increasing difficulty.

  • Harness solar and wind energy (if available) in order to power the base's structures.

  • Grow hydroponic Vegetables and synthesize Vitromeat to feed your population.

  • Mine and produce raw resources, process them, manufacture goods, and establish a production chain.

  • Carefully manage the colonist immigration flow to ensure you have the people with the right skills.

  • Survive disasters like meteors, sandstorms or solar flares and defend your base from intruders.

  • Mechanize your base by creating your own bots that will help with the more arduous tasks.

  • Grow your colony from a few initial pioneers to a vibrant planetbase with hundreds of colonists.
