Evaluation

Underspace entered Steam Early Access on April 10, 2024 and remains in Early Access. The solo developer at Pastaspace Interactive has maintained a highly active and consistent development cadence throughout the Early Access period, shipping a series of major milestone updates: Gods & Corpses (May 27, 2024), Faces in the Fog (September 2, 2024), The Color Out In Space (June 26, 2025), a major mod support and Steam Workshop update (December 31, 2025), and the public multiplayer beta launch (May 25, 2026). On May 25, 2026, the developer announced the game had reached a fully feature-complete state, with only voice acting and bug fixes remaining before the 1.0 full release. The most recent update — version 1.55.6, released on August 27, 2026 — continues this trajectory. In that post, the developer explicitly mentions having debated whether to delay the patch until a "proper 1.0 launch," confirming that a 1.0 release is still the imminent next step. The patch itself delivered a sweeping expansion of the game's modding tools and multiplayer synchronization, and notes that multiplayer is now in a "near feature and content complete state," with a dedicated server mode and the multiplayer campaign still listed as remaining items. The developer has been transparent and consistently communicative throughout Early Access with no worrying gaps in communication. The 1.0 launch is clearly the next milestone on the developer's own stated roadmap, and active work continues toward that goal as of August 27, 2026.

About this game

The spiritual successor to Freelancer, Underspace is an open-world sandbox RPG with a Lovecraftian twist, where every star system is handcrafted, and every star system has something to see or do. Jump into the bizarre galaxy of Croft, step into the role you want, and thrive alone or online with friends (multiplayer on near term Early Access roadmap). But beware! The storms rule the stars.

Be a miner picking through crystallized bones of ancient star beasts, a trader hauling artifacts to far-flung outposts, a pirate robbing spacetrains, an explorer combing through lost stellar cities, or a hunter chasing down unknowable monstrosities that spew forth from the storms. Brave violent weather, eldritch beasts, and the terrors of the unknown as you make your mark in the universe.
