Evaluation

XERA: Survival launched as a free-to-play online survival game in September 2021 and has operated as a live service ever since, running through multiple seasons with server wipes, season passes, and an in-game cosmetic shop (X-Coin). The game has received consistent seasonal updates: Season 7 launched on May 29, 2024, followed by a major mid-season content patch (Islands & Farms) on August 3, 2024, then Season 8 on December 19, 2024, a feature patch on January 15, 2025, and most recently Season 8.5 on March 5, 2026. However, the Season 8.5 announcement contains some concerning signals. The developer noted that OCE (Oceania) servers have been permanently decommissioned, and X-Coin purchases — the game's primary monetization mechanism — have been disabled "until further notice." This mirrors the kind of cautious language the studio's lead Joshua used in July 2023, when he acknowledged resource constraints and an extended period without updates. That 2023 period was eventually followed by a healthy run of updates through 2024, so the studio has navigated difficulties before. As of June 27, 2026, the March 5, 2026 post is the last developer communication, and no explanation has been given for when or whether purchases will resume. For a game that depends on cosmetic revenue to fund server infrastructure and development, an indefinite suspension of that revenue stream — combined with server decommissioning — is a meaningful warning sign that the game's future support is uncertain.
Evidence
Season 8.5 launched with a maintenance wipe. OCE servers permanently decommissioned. X-Coin purchases disabled 'until further notice,' though existing X-Coin balances can still be redeemed in-game. This is the last official developer communication as of June 27, 2026.

2022: The era of AI has arrived. The world is in chaos after a prototype combat robot - banned by law and awaiting secure destruction by XERA Corporation - became self-aware, escaped and began replication on an industrial scale. Failed attempts to remotely shut down the AI simply triggered a war that humanity could not afford to lose.

Nation turned on nation in a fight for control over resources to defend against the robots. With the attention of the world’s military elsewhere, disenfranchised operatives have gathered to ransack what was left of the XERA facilities, setting up two forward operating bases, Safe Zones on each side of the forest that was the hiding place for mankind’s greatest failure of leadership.

Between these bases there are no rules of engagement. The only imperative is survival.

XERA: Survival is developed by Spotted Kiwi Interactive, an independent development company based in the deep south of New Zealand (Aotearoa) with team members around the world: 4 in NZ, 1 in Chile, 1 in Russia and 1 in USA.
