Zelter entered Steam Early Access on October 22, 2020, and has been in that state ever since. The game has received meaningful updates over the years — most notably the addition of Pioneer Mode on August 1, 2022, which represented a major content milestone after roughly 15 months of development work.
Following Pioneer Mode's launch, the developer posted a detailed plan in October 2022 outlining further improvements (new weapons, vehicles, expanded NPC systems, map changes) and signaled that multiplayer remained the next big goal. Then communication went quiet for nearly a year.
On September 29, 2023, the developer resurfaced with a post acknowledging the silence and admitting they had overestimated what they could deliver from earlier promises. They introduced a companion project — Zelter: Zombie Zhooter — as a testbed for multiplayer systems, and committed to publishing an updated roadmap to version 1.0 after Steam Next Fest concluded. A follow-up post on October 16, 2023 reiterated that a roadmap was coming soon.
That roadmap has never appeared. There have been no developer posts, patch notes, or announcements since October 16, 2023 — a silence of over two and a half years as of June 25, 2026. The 1.0 release, multiplayer integration, and the promised roadmap all remain undelivered. Given the studio's history of extended silences, their own acknowledgment of having overpromised in the past, and the complete absence of communication since late 2023, the current status of development is genuinely unclear.

Pioneer Mode is an endless mode with heavy emphasis on recruiting the survivors you find to stand against the zombie horde.
