Age of Empires II (Retired)

Age of Empires II: HD Edition (2013) is a completed product with no further updates planned. The store description and short description both state explicitly that with the release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition in 2019, this edition "will not be updated further." The developer has clearly communicated that all development attention has moved to the Definitive Edition, which is a separate Steam product. The HD Edition received three DLC expansions during its active life — The Forgotten (November 7, 2013), The African Kingdoms (November 5, 2015), and Rise of the Rajas (December 19, 2016) — all of which have been released. Patch activity continued through 2018, with the last feature patch (5.8) arriving on September 6, 2018, focused on balance improvements. No updates of any kind have been posted to this product since 2019, and even those posts were promotional announcements for the Definitive Edition rather than updates to the HD Edition itself. The game remains purchasable on Steam, so players can still buy and play it, but no new content or patches will be delivered to this version. Anyone seeking ongoing updates and content should look to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition instead.
