Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition launched on June 12, 2014 as a remastered package bundling the original Rise of Nations and its Thrones and Patriots expansion, with enhanced visuals and Steamworks integration. It launched as a complete product with no post-launch content additions planned. After launch, the developer (SkyBox Labs) periodically released technical and maintenance updates: most notably, Patch 1.20 in mid-2017 modernized the multiplayer architecture and added cross-network play with Xbox Live players (announced August 18, 2017, released September 14, 2017), followed by a series of bug fixes through November 2017. In a July 2017 post, the team stated the goal of these changes was to keep the game running "for the next 10 years and beyond" — framing the work as long-term maintenance rather than new content development. The most recent developer communication was a June 27, 2024 patch that migrated the game to PlayFab services for modern security compliance and platform stability. The developer explicitly noted "there are no other changes in this patch." No new gameplay content, DLC, or expansions have ever been released or announced post-launch. The game has no unreleased DLC on the store. The store description presents the Extended Edition as a definitive package ("includes Rise of Nations and Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots"). The game launched complete, and all subsequent updates have been purely technical maintenance. The content of the game has been complete since its June 12, 2014 release.
