Evaluation

Cultist Simulator launched on May 31, 2018 and received four paid story DLCs over the following years: The Dancer (October 16, 2018), The Priest (May 30, 2019), The Ghoul (May 30, 2019), and The Exile (May 27, 2020). A digital edition of The Lady Afterwards — a tabletop RPG set in the same universe — was added to the store on November 18, 2021. All six DLC items in the store listing are released with no unreleased entries. In August 2023, Weather Factory announced the launch of their follow-up game Book of Hours and noted that Cultist Simulator is "in a good place right now" and "stable," with ongoing bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. They added a caveat that larger DLC might come "later down the line, but no promises yet" — a very tentative hint rather than a firm commitment. No such DLC has materialized in the time since. In January 2025, the developer announced that their primary focus had shifted to Travelling at Night, described as "probably our last" Secret Histories game, and that they were bringing French and Spanish translations to Cultist Simulator as a way of continuing to support it. Those translations shipped in beta in May 2025 and went fully live on June 5, 2025. The most recent developer communication is a bug-fix patch from October 7, 2025, addressing Steam Deck controls and a Unity security vulnerability. The pattern since mid-2020 is one of maintenance: bug fixes, quality-of-life patches, and now new language support — but no new story content or announced DLC. The developer's own words describe Cultist Simulator as a completed, stable product that they love and maintain, while their creative focus has moved to their next title. The 2023 "no promises" remark about possible future DLC was speculative and has not been followed up with any concrete announcement in the intervening years. The last substantive content addition was The Lady Afterwards digital edition in November 2021, which serves as the practical completion point for the game's content.
Evidence
Developer states their focus is on Travelling at Night, their next (and likely last) Secret Histories game, while supporting Cultist Simulator with new French and Spanish translations.

About this game

Cultist Simulator is a game of apocalypse and yearning from Alexis Kennedy, creator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea. Play as a seeker after unholy mysteries, in a 1920s-themed setting of hidden gods and secret histories. Perhaps you're looking for knowledge, or power, or beauty, or revenge. Perhaps you just want the colours beneath the skin of the world.

In this roguelike narrative card game, what you find may transform you forever. Every choice you make, from moment to moment, doesn't just advance the narrative - it also shapes it.

Become a scholar of the unseen arts. Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Craft tools and summon spirits. Indoctrinate innocents. Seize your place as the herald of a new age.

In this 20-40 hour game, you'll:

  • Combine cards to tell your own story in a rich, Lovecraftian world of ambition, appetite and abomination. Corrupt your friends. Consume your enemies. There is never only one history.

  • Found a cult, dedicated to the Red Grail, or the Witch-and-Sister, or the Forge of Days. Recruit Believers and promote them to Disciples to serve as burglars, researchers, cat's-paws. Use your disciples to keep you fed - or feed on your disciples.

  • Unravel arcane, unacknowledged mysteries. Translate grimoires and glean their lore. Locate and pillage the Star Shattered Fane. Penetrate the realm of the Hours, and win a place in their service. Perhaps - if you are very cunning - you may even glimpse the Mansus.

  • Outwit rivals, investigators and the increasingly suspicious Authorities. Your own altered Appetites may force you to act abominably, but your Cause must not be stopped.

  • Transcend death with a story-driven legacy system. Perhaps your inheritors will complete the Rite of the Crucible Soul. Perhaps they'll find peace in a pleasing career. Perhaps they'll bring the Dawn.
