Evaluation

Darkest Dungeon II launched on May 8, 2023 and has received substantial post-launch content. The game's Kingdoms mode shipped three free modules — the final one, Curse of the Court, released on August 28, 2025. The hero rework initiative was completed across two Steadfast Steward updates (the second landing October 29, 2025). Several paid DLC packs have also shipped, the most recent being the Hero Origin Pack on June 26, 2025. On May 8, 2026 (the game's 3rd anniversary), Red Hook Studios explicitly confirmed that a brand-new Darkest Dungeon II DLC is currently in development, targeting an early 2027 release. The studio noted that beta testing sign-ups were open and testing was expected to begin in late summer 2026. This is a direct, unambiguous developer statement of planned future content for this game. On August 18, 2026, Red Hook released "The Fire's Edge" — a DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon (not DD2) that ports the Duelist and Runaway heroes from DD2 into the first game. The August 18 launch post also mentions a followup release planned for the end of August 2026 and a new mod loader in progress, indicating the studio remains actively engaged. Note that The Fire's Edge belongs to the original Darkest Dungeon, not this game, so it does not constitute content shipped to DD2 — but the studio's activity and the confirmed DD2 DLC announcement together paint a clear picture of ongoing development. All five DLC listed on the store are released. However, the developer's own May 2026 statement confirms additional content is on the way, making this a developer-confirmed situation rather than one inferred from patterns.

Kingdoms

New Game Mode - Kingdoms - Now Playable!

“This squalid Kingdom, these corrupted lands, they are yours now, and you are bound to them.”
Kingdoms is an entirely new stand-alone strategic campaign game mode available to play now in Darkest Dungeon II.

Featuring a completely reimagined game structure, Kingdoms is a parallel game experience to the Confessions core game mode. You will be challenged to defend a crumbling realm against incursion from all new enemy factions.

Manage a persistent roster of heroes, gather resources, and pursue an epic questline in order to track down and defeat the source of evil before all is lost.

Progress in each game mode is tracked separately, and you can freely switch back and forth between active sessions of either.

Kingdoms is being released in thematic modules, each focusing on a different enemy threat. All three adventure modules - “Hunger of the Beast Clan”, “Secrets of the Coven”, and “Curse of the Court”- are available now!
