Darkest Dungeon released on January 19, 2016 and received several major content expansions through 2020, after which Red Hook Studios focused on Darkest Dungeon II. On August 18, 2026 — the game's first new DLC since 2020 — Red Hook released The Fire's Edge, introducing two new playable heroes (The Runaway and The Duelist, originally from Darkest Dungeon II), a new Burn combat mechanic, unique trinkets, and three new Hamlet districts.
In the same release post, Red Hook explicitly stated that more is coming: they are working on a new and improved mod loader, and a follow-up release is currently planned for the end of August 2026. The developer described this as an open-ended effort to extend the game's lifespan further, with plans to act on additional community requests. Red Hook's founders also confirmed in January 2026 that the studio remains actively engaged with the franchise, and the pattern of activity throughout 2025 (a 64-bit client migration in February 2025, bug fixes through July 2025) shows sustained developer engagement with the original game.
