Evaluation

Dragon: The Game entered Steam Early Access on November 7, 2014, and has never left it. The store page clearly states it is an unfinished alpha, and a long list of features — including multiplayer, Steam Workshop integration, a full narrative, and a complete open world — were promised but never delivered. The game received several meaningful updates through 2016 and into early 2018. Two notable content patches landed in July 2016 (v8.5) and October 2016 (v8.9), adding new mechanics, regions, dragon types, and combat systems. Throughout 2017, the developer went through a difficult period: the lead developer disclosed in April 2017 that the project had lost momentum and scope had to be cut (removing the open world in favor of zone-based maps, dropping multiplayer, and deferring Linux support). In July 2017, they acknowledged the game was "in a holding pattern" due to funding difficulties, with contributors working in their spare time. By October 2017, a new investment partner had been found and a structured plan for restructuring the company and hiring new developers was outlined. A May 2018 performance patch followed, and a July 2018 post announced another update was nearly ready. That July 2018 post is the last official communication from the developer. Since then — a period spanning from July 6, 2018 to today, June 28, 2026 — there has been complete silence. No patch, no blog post, no announcement of any kind. The planned update mentioned in July 2018 was never released. The promised 1.0 version, with all its outlined features, has never arrived. Given the funding instability documented before the silence began, and nearly eight years without any communication, the game's development status is deeply uncertain.
Evidence
Last official developer communication. Announced an imminent update with new terrain streaming and map content, but that update never appeared. This is the final post from the studio.

Development Roadmap

Dragon is currently in early alpha and we've got a long way to go to make Dragon the game it deserves to be. All features and plans listed here are subject to change, we may add or remove features as we learn more about the community's needs during our Early Access.
  • More monsters, wildlife, and fantasy races to populate the world
  • Quests, story lines, and lore
  • More and larger worlds to explore and conquer
  • Randomly generated worlds
  • Expanded combat and improved NPC AI
  • More destructible and intractable environments and objects
  • Additional breath weapons and magic
  • Updated graphics and physics
  • Improved sound and music
  • Awesome new dragon models. Play as different "species" of dragon
  • Additional RPG mechanics and customization options
  • Weather effects and natural disasters (volcanoes, tornadoes, etc.)
  • Expanded mod support
  • Additional languages and controller support

At this point we think Dragon will reach retail version 1.0 in nine to 24 months; depending on funding and the amount of content in the final game.
