Emergency 2016 was released on October 15, 2015 and is no longer available for purchase on Steam — there are no active purchase options on the store page. The game received several updates over its lifetime, including a major free content update in October 2016 (Update 3.0.1) that added new freeplay and multiplayer events, and continued patch support through November 2017. The developer also released Emergency 20 in November 2017, a 20th-anniversary edition that incorporates the campaigns from Emergency 2016 alongside content from other entries in the series. The last recorded developer communication for this title was in November 2017. With the game removed from sale and no developer activity since late 2017, this title is no longer available to new buyers.

The new medieval map takes you to Cologne, where the plague ravages the city in the shadow of the new cathedral. As a plague doctor, you attempt to stem the epidemic with remedies available at the time. Centuries later, the plague strikes again and you must fight it in the metropolises of our time in a new campaign. In the course of the extensive campaign, minor accidents alternate with challenging major events, ensuring hours of engrossing gameplay. Before starting, you can complete the integrated tutorial, which teaches the game's basic mechanics and functions.
