Evaluation
Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare released from Early Access on October 4, 2019. At launch, the developer described the game as "feature complete" but committed to continued bug fixing, minor content additions, and modding support.
The game received several patches and updates through mid-2020, including a weather system, artillery, and new maps (Update v1.4, July 2020). However, in February 2021, the developer publicly disclosed that the studio had gone through bankruptcy, which had caused development to stall. After recovering, the original three-person core team announced a complete overhaul and remaster of the game — a ground-up rebuild with dramatically improved graphics, AI, vehicles, infantry roles, gun modification, and world interaction systems. Crucially, this remaster is planned as a free update for existing owners, not a separate purchase.
Development updates on the remaster followed in June 2022 (framework ~80% complete) and most recently on March 31, 2024, which showed extensive in-progress footage of the remastered version including vehicles, new UI, enhanced combat, and siege mechanics.
However, since that March 31, 2024 post, there has been no further communication from the developer — a silence of over 15 months as of June 2026. The remaster has no announced release date, and the studio's prior history of financial difficulty adds context to this extended quiet period. The remastered version remains unreleased, and it is unclear whether active development is continuing at this time.
Evidence
Developer shared extensive progress on the remastered version, showing new vehicles, infantry roles, gun modification, enhanced combat, and world interactions. All content marked as work in progress. This is the most recent developer communication.
Developer detailed the full scope of the planned remaster: overhauled combat, graphics, progression, vehicles, and AI. The remaster will be a free update for existing owners, replacing the current build. No release date given beyond 'half a year' estimate from April 2021.
