Gangs of Space entered Steam Early Access on August 10, 2017 and received a handful of patches and feature updates through late 2017. However, on November 26, 2018, the two-person development team (Grouroux and Erhune) published a formal closure announcement. They cited three compounding problems: no income from the game despite years of work, failure to secure outside investment even with 70,000 players, and complete exhaustion of the team's energy and resources. The announcement laid out a specific wind-down schedule: DLC sales would end November 30, 2018, and the official servers and support would close on May 31, 2019. The developers also stated it was "almost certain" neither would ever work on Gangs of Space again. No subsequent news post has appeared to indicate this closure was reversed or that a new team took over. The game has never graduated from Early Access and the servers it depended on for its multiplayer functionality were due to close years ago.
