Evaluation

JUNKPUNK entered Steam Early Access on November 12, 2021 and has been steadily building out its content in a milestone structure based around three "Monoliths" — major story and progression pillars. Monolith 2 shipped as a large update on May 4, 2022, followed by the "Player Update" (Monolith 3 groundwork) on March 3, 2023. Monolith 3 has been in development and repeatedly announced since at least late 2022, but has not yet shipped. In February 2024, the studio brought on a new game designer (Russell) specifically to accelerate progress toward Monolith 3. However, by April 2024, the team pivoted to first reworking Monolith 1 — announced as a necessary foundation fix before Monolith 3 could be built properly. A July 2024 progress update confirmed significant work was underway, including a full engine migration from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5, but no release date was given. On December 31, 2024, the lead developer (Rich) acknowledged the studio had effectively gone dark for roughly 6 months during 2024 due to severe financial hardship, citing the difficult broader games industry conditions. He confirmed the studio survived and promised developer updates starting in January 2025. However, as of June 23, 2026, no further official communications have appeared — meaning the studio has now been silent for approximately 18 months since that last post, with no follow-through on the promised January 2025 updates. The game's own roadmap still has substantial content outstanding: the Monolith 1 rework, a subsequent Monolith 2 overhaul, and then Monolith 3 itself. The engine migration to Unreal 5 was also in progress as of mid-2024. Given the combination of significant unfinished commitments, a studio that already admitted to a severe financial crisis, and nearly 18 months of silence since the last communication, the development status is genuinely uncertain.
Evidence
Developer acknowledges ~6 months of silence due to severe industry-wide financial hardship. Confirms the studio survived and promises developer updates in January 2025. This is the last known official communication as of June 23, 2026.

About this game

Embark on a journey of transformation to restore an entire planet that has encountered a horrific runaway event. You must craft, manufacture, grow and manage to return the planet to its former prosperity. JUNKPUNK is an upto 5 player multiplayer experience but can still be enjoyed as a singleplayer. Explore a huge handcrafted and detailed open world filled with different biomes and locations. Explore these locations to discover new items, tech and story.

Clean and transform the world you have crash landed on, using a multitude of machines, crafted items and tools. Explore the world and collect varying types of scrap materials found across the planet's surface. Recycle and refine these items to craft and build higher tier equipment and items.

Collect seeds, balance soil, water and power to grow plants. Start regrowing plant life for the planet's surface. Use these plants to create a biological key and transform the planet's atmosphere.

Manufacture to construct special items to assist in unlocking super machines and convert the planet. Start by manually crafting then progressively automate your entire workflow to become almost fully autonomous.

Construct a customisable base from many different pieces that can be found and refined on the planet's surface. Build your own vision of manufacturing.

Brave dust storms and extreme windspeeds. Harvest fluctuating energy from the sun and the wind. Store power in batteries as backup to continue automated crafting.
