Of Guards and Thieves has been in Steam Early Access since its initial release on July 16, 2014. In December 2016, when the game transitioned to free-to-play, the developer explicitly confirmed it would remain in Early Access until they were satisfied with the content and polish — a milestone that has never been publicly declared reached. The game received a steady stream of updates through 2019 and into 2020, including a major overhaul (Update 90, June 2019), the Zombie Rush game mode (Update 91, September 2019), and the Hunting Grounds free DLC with the Jungle Skin Pack (Update 93, July 11, 2020). That July 11, 2020 post is the last official communication from Subvert Games on record. Since July 11, 2020, there have been no patch notes, announcements, developer blogs, or any other public communications — a silence of nearly six years as of June 2026. The developer had previously been posting multiple times per month, making this prolonged silence a significant departure from their established pattern. The game has never exited Early Access, and no statement about the conclusion of development or a 1.0 release has ever been made. All eight DLC items are released and accounted for, but the underlying game itself remains in an unfinished Early Access state with no word on whether development is continuing, has been quietly abandoned, or is being planned for eventual completion.
