Evaluation

Pixel Descent launched on March 6, 2024 and has received a consistent stream of updates since before its official release. The developer shipped feature patches throughout 2023 and continued post-launch with notable updates including a weapon modifiers overhaul (V1.1, August 7, 2024), Elite Mode (V1.2, September 6, 2024), a dynamic difficulty system (V1.3, March 29, 2025), new Soul Cards and leveling changes (V1.4, April 9, 2025), further character and floor changes (V1.45, June 15, 2025), and a small bug fix (V1.47, September 16, 2025). The pattern throughout 2024 and into 2025 showed updates roughly every 1–3 months. The last developer communication of any kind was on September 16, 2025 — now over 12 months ago as of today, September 24, 2026. This silence exceeds both the developer's established update cadence (1–3 months between patches historically) and the 6-month silence threshold. The developer has never announced that the game is complete or that development has ended, but there is also no outstanding announced content that remains undelivered. The March 2025 patch note mentioning "more special cards will likely be added in the future" was a light forward-looking comment, but it has not been followed up with any announcement or delivery in the 18 months since. Given the absence of any announced unshipped content and the silence now substantially exceeding the historical update pattern, the game is assessed as complete at this time.

About this game

Without fear, you signed the contract which would forever sever your ties to the world above, and now it is your sworn duty to brave the abyss and uncover the secrets of the old world. Your death is guaranteed, but so is your status as a legend.

Gameplay

The ever-shifting abyss provides an adequate challenge to fearless dungeoneers, but don't get too reckless as you only have one life to prove yourself with. Central to this plight is the dynamic of holding your position and pushing ever forward as hoards of monsters try to break your foothold; they are quite numerous afterall, and you'd do well to stand your ground. Don't stall for too long however, or a terrifying force might make itself known and attempt to steal your glory!
