Evaluation
Salt and Sanctuary launched on May 17, 2016 and has been updated by Ska Studios consistently ever since. Two major content milestones mark the game's post-launch history: Linux and macOS support alongside the Japanese version launch on July 8, 2016, and a substantial Randomizer mode — featuring three challenge variants, 4K resolution support, and a migration to the MonoGame framework — on August 1, 2024. In between, the studio delivered meaningful feature-level patches, including cloud save support and quality-of-life improvements (October 29, 2022) and a new Enhanced Combat mode offering an alternative balance experience (April 15, 2023). The most recent patch, 1.0.2.2, arrived on October 21, 2025, with balance adjustments across Enhanced and Randomizer modes, bug fixes, and backend changes noted as useful to modders. The last major content release (the Randomizer update) was on August 1, 2024, and with a roughly eight-year gap between the first and second major content drops, the current window since August 2024 — just over 14 months as of today — does not indicate the pattern has lapsed. The developer has not announced that development is complete, and the October 2025 patch confirms the studio remains actively engaged with the game.
Evidence
Patch 1.0.2.0 added a full Randomizer mode with three challenge variants, 4K/UHD resolution support, Turkish localization, and a migration from XNA to MonoGame — a major content addition.
Patch 1.0.1.0 introduced Enhanced Combat mode, a new optional balance variant for the game, along with quality-of-life improvements.

About this game
A doomed sailor is shipwrecked on an uncharted island. In fog-shrouded valleys, where grinning, mossy corpses cling to rusted arms, shambling figures begin to stir. Beneath crumbling, salt-worn structures, labyrinthine passageways lead to unspeakable evil, long forgotten by man.
Salt and Sanctuary seamlessly combines fast, brutal, and complex 2D combat with richly developed RPG mechanics. Discover, craft, and upgrade over 600 weapons, armor pieces, spells, and items as you explore a cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, desecrated monuments, and the fallen lords they once celebrated.
From Ska Studios, the award-winning indie studio behind a long list of stylistic, visceral, and brutally executed action titles that includes The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, and Charlie Murder, comes Salt and Sanctuary, the studio’s most ambitious title to date.
