Evaluation

Seals of the Bygone is a survival roguelike that entered Steam Early Access on March 13, 2020. The developer — a solo indie developer named Logan (rologfos) — released updates fairly steadily through mid-2022, including two major content drops (the Runewarden Update in August 2020 and Return From Exile in October 2021) alongside several feature patches and balance updates. The most recent update on record is v0.12.5, posted on July 9, 2022. That is the last official communication from the developer. The game has been in Early Access for over six years with no announced 1.0 release date, and there has been no developer activity since July 2022 — a silence of nearly four years as of today. A note from October 2021 is worth flagging: when the developer released v0.9 after a 337-day gap, they wrote "I can't tell you what the future of this game looks like, but I think it still has one." This suggests the developer was already uncertain about the game's trajectory at that point. Since then, a further update cycle occurred through mid-2022, but development has apparently stalled again — this time for an even longer stretch with no follow-up message. The store also lists an unreleased soundtrack DLC with no release date, indicating at least one piece of content that has been planned but not delivered. Given the extended silence since July 9, 2022, the lack of any 1.0 roadmap or completion announcement, and the game's continued Early Access status, there is genuine uncertainty about whether active development is ongoing.

About this game

Seals of the Bygone is a survival roguelike with a large cast of playable Sealers designed for couch co-op fans and perma-death enthusiasts. Seals of the Bygone seeks to iterate on the subgenre with an emphasis on character skill expression and run diversity.

Class based roguelike action!

Explore randomized zones, defeat enemies to gain experience and gold, find powerful items, battle intimidating bosses, and discover the secrets of the Bygone! Unlock new things to keep runs fresh by completing challenges and ranking up. Each Sealer has a unique kit waiting to be mastered. How far can you make it?

The Seals are failing!

Void monsters previously sealed away are breaking loose! Seals act as an objective in-run, get to them before they break to siphon bonus void flames!

Your run choices matter!

Manage 2 in-run currencies to build your character, your way. Randomness can always be mitigated and outplayed with skill.

Encounter powerful bosses!

Bosses require a different approach to combat. Learn their attacks and exploit their weaknesses to obtain unique items.

Bring up to 3 friends into local co-op!

Support each other with buffs and healing effects. Some Sealers' skills can be coordinated with others to maximize their impact.
