Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution
Early access since Sep 2018
Play with evolution! Species: ALRE is a scientifically-grounded, emergent simulation of natural selection. Creatures evolve and speciate in response to in-game mutation and selection forces, allowing you to experience and tinker with evolution in real-time.

Evaluation
Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution is an evolution simulator that has been in Early Access since September 28, 2018. The developer, Quasar, shipped version 0.14.1 (the "Hearty Breakfast Update") on August 31, 2022 — a substantial release adding eggs, overhauled pregnancy and diet systems, procedurally generated fur, ambient soundscapes, and combat improvements. Several smaller patches followed through November 2022 to address bugs and add localization support.
On October 24, 2022, Quasar published a detailed design blog post outlining plans for version 0.15.0, which would overhaul the entire vegetation system with 3D trees, evolving plant life, and a much more significant "habitat" survival mechanic. This is meaningful, announced future content that has not yet shipped.
However, the last developer communication of any kind was the November 25, 2022 localization patch (0.14.2.6). As of June 27, 2026, the game has received no updates, announcements, or posts from the developer in over three and a half years. This is particularly concerning given that Quasar had previously gone on a long unexplained hiatus (acknowledged in a June 2022 post citing untreated mental illness), and the promised 0.15.0 content has never arrived.
The game remains purchasable on Steam and is still marked as Early Access. The 0.15.0 plans were clearly communicated, but the prolonged silence — far beyond any reasonable development window — raises serious questions about whether active development is continuing.
Evidence
Version 0.14.2.6 localization patch released — the last official communication from the developer as of June 2026.
Developer published detailed design plans for version 0.15.0, outlining a major overhaul to the vegetation/habitat system with 3D trees, evolving plants, and expanded survival pressure mechanics. This content has not shipped.

About this game
Species: Artificial Life Real Evolution is an evolution simulator that allows you to create, destroy, observe and tinker with life on it's never ending, harsh march of refinement! Simulated from the very first principles of evolutionary science:

Variation
- Every creature is uniquely defined by its genes.
Mutation
- Child creatures are slightly randomly modified versions of their parent(s).
Natural Selection
- The environment affects every creature in their struggle to survive.
Observe or Guide
Whether you just want to observe, watch and study as the tree of life constructs itself from a single species, or you want to be an active influence on the development of the species in the game, the choice is up to you! Take a hands-on approach by using the nursery, an isolated area where you can tinker with the gene pool to your heart’s content. Use rovers to decide which creatures get to eat today and which ones starve! Create global catastrophes like an ice-age or a world-spanning flood to weed out the most vulnerable species. Or simply sit back and watch the life-and-death saga unfold!
Tell Your Story
However you treat your evolutionary sandbox, we give you the tools to tell it’s story! View every single evolutionary step in detail using the clade diagram, see where each species are living using the satellite map, get a better picture of how varied your gene pool actually is with the web of life, and view every possible detail on each creature using the creature inspection tools.
