Evaluation

The First Tree launched on September 14, 2017 as a short, self-contained story-driven exploration game by solo developer David Wehle. After launch, the developer continued refining the game — adding Linux support, controller improvements, and official localization in 2017–2018. On November 30, 2018, a substantial update was released alongside console ports (Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4), which the developer himself called "the definitive version of The First Tree." This update added reworked jump physics, developer commentary mode, new achievements, new secret items, and numerous bug fixes — representing the culmination of post-launch development. A Mac compatibility fix followed in February 2020, but this was purely maintenance. The developer's September 2021 personal update makes clear that they had moved on from The First Tree and were working on a new project. By August–September 2024, David Wehle publicly revealed that new project — a completely separate game called We Harvest Shadows — at Gamescom. No future content for The First Tree has been announced or suggested at any point. The store description describes a short, complete narrative experience with no mention of ongoing updates or additional content.
